Aurora Water
Aurora Water is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the drinking water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage systems, treatment of drinking water and non-potable reclaimed wastewater, billing and collection, public outreach and water conservation, acquisition and development of future water rights, major capital projects programs, and quality control for regulatory compliance and public health.
The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.


  • Project management including planning, design, construction management, budget and schedule management for each project
  • Ensures compliance with design and government regulations
  • Determines and establishes construction standards and materials
  • Works with consulting engineers, contractors, and other agencies to explain, interpret, and create City's design requirements, codes, and specifications
    • Reviews development drawings to ensure consistency with Aurora Water standards specifications
    • Attends pre-application meetings, pre-submittal meetings and provides information for incoming developments
  • Provides professional/technical assistance and project updates to citizens, other departments, management, and City Council
  • Evaluates proposals and conducts interviews for consultant selection
  • Coordinate with all City departments and all other stakeholders in the scheduling, development, and completion of Aurora Water projects.
  • Assures contract compliance and that completed projects meet established quality

  • Keeps current on latest trends in technology and procedures in the utilities industry and makes recommendations for implementation in Aurora
  • Performs one or more of the following:
    • Works with City's Purchasing and Contracts Division in publishing requests for proposals and in selecting consultants and contractors for capital projects
    • Negotiates scopes, fees, and project schedules
  • Performs other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor's Degree in civil, mechanical, environmental engineering, or directly related field
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering experience in water
    treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and pumping, or stormwater
    engineering projects

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

  • Knowledge of current engineering design and construction principles and practices applicable to public utilities engineering projects
  • Local, state and federal laws and regulations related to assigned function.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Establish and fulfill goals and objectives
  • Plan and schedule work unit operations
  • Perform as a project manager for complex projects
  • Prepare requests for proposals and qualifications for design and construction projects

  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and project management skills
  • Strong verbal and communications skills

Licenses and Certifications:  
  • Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record
    Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 12 months; CO preferred


Physical Demands

  • Sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing
  • Hand/eye coordination to operate computer and related equipment
  • Vision to read legal descriptions and review drawings
  • Some speech and hearing to maintain communications with other employees and citizens
Work Environment
  • Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment; occasionally works nights and weekend
Equipment Used
  • Frequently uses standard office equipment including computer, calculator, multi-line telephones, and copy/fax machines
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
