Principal Engineering Technician

ABOUT THIS POSITION
Currently, there is one Principal Engineering Technician vacancy in the Programming and Project Delivery (PPD) Division of the Street Transportation Department. The incumbent would be responsible for designing and producing traffic signal plans and signing and striping plans (in AutoCAD), in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the City’s standards, as applicable. This position also applies civil and transportation engineering knowledge and skills to a variety of projects for the Street Transportation Department Capital Improvement Program (CIP) including studies, design and review of horizontal and vertical roadway geometry. The incumbent would be required to work closely with outside agencies, neighboring municipalities, and private developers to provide guidance on roadway geometry and propose alternate solutions, whenever necessary. In addition to roadway geometry and applicable design standards, a thorough understanding of the Street Classification Map is necessary.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
Proficiency/expertise in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
Solid knowledge base of roadway design principles, including traffic signal, signing and striping design.
Aptitude for great customer service, excellent verbal and written communication and project management skills.
This recruitment may be used by any department for any current or future vacancies over the life of the eligible list.

$54,392 - $81,245 annually. Appointment can be made above the minimum depending upon qualifications.

Six years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work, including three years of paraprofessional civil engineering experience (or one year of experience at the level of Chief Construction Inspector, Chief Engineering Technician, or Chief Drafting Technician).
An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered.
Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
Working at heights greater than ten feet, climbing ladders and being exposed to noise, dust, heat, cold, vibration, traffic and other outside working conditions may be required.
Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - The job requirements listed above, plus:
A Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a degree/certification in a related field.
