Position Summary

The School of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering is accepting applications for a Supervisor of its Engineering Labs. This position has a direct report to the Associate Chair and works with everyone from faculty, staff and students to UNM contractors as well as interacts with internal and external vendors on a daily basis.


The department is comprised of approximately 15 faculty, 9 staff, 6 research professors, 7 adjunct faculty and approximately 650 students to include undergraduate and graduate.


This position arranges/coordinates contractor visits related to new and/or updated products, designs, testing, calibrating, equipment replacement and/or purchasing. This could involve designing and building of certain equipment, or experimental setup, in order to assist personnel with lab functionality. Provide use of manuals and/or training demonstrations of equipment as needed. Provide oversight of technical leadership and instruction to personnel, to include undergraduate and graduate students, as needed to meet the research needs of the department.

The person in this position is the liaison between all activity that takes place in the building and serves as the building coordinator. This person will attend building coordinator meetings as scheduled, inquire about updated and/or newly adopted processes and procedures for all building related issues. Be responsible for originating and submitting all internal work orders related to routine building maintenance.

This position oversees daily activities of the department's labs to include; testing equipment, hardware installs, software downloads, license updates along with ensuring the necessary data and phone line ports are activated and in proper working order. Provides IT support to all ITV classrooms in assisting faculty, staff and students with conducting day-to-day instruction and research. This includes; AV systems, overhead projectors, PC's and display screens. This position has a student employee to assist in this area which has a direct report to the job.


Works with the mechanical engineering machine shop on getting machining done that is needed for experimental parts. This can involve creating three-dimensional CAD models before sending to the machine shop.


Manages department inventory. Adheres to UNM’s Inventory guidelines to assure all equipment is accounted for, necessary tags are in place, tracking location of inventory and tracking/monitoring all inventory activity. Providing reports to Chair and Department Administrator as needed.
This position supervises student employees to assist primarily with IT and other duties as assigned.
This is a Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm position and reliable transportation is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience overseeing all aspects of lab coordination within a busy Engineering environment
  • Experience troubleshooting complex experimental equipment
  • Experience assessing/repairing digital delay generators
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD Modeling
  • Experience with 3D printers
  • Experience with managing the activity of a complex building
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience working with and tracking inventory to include providing reports to upper management as needed
  • 3 -5 years IT experience
